Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning

RPL recognizes formal learning, informal training, work experience, and life experience when evidence shows current competency aligned with academic expectations.

Key principles

  • Recognition is based on current competencies regardless of where they were acquired.
  • Assessment must be fair, valid, reliable, flexible, and available without exclusion.
  • Applicants must receive appropriate support during the RPL process.
  • Evidence must be reviewed against clear criteria and relevant competency standards.

Objectives

  • Increase access to degree study for qualified experienced learners.
  • Ensure each assessment is fair and focused on eligibility for prior learning credit.
  • Use valid and reliable assessment techniques aligned with international principles.
  • Recognize non-traditional learning as a valid pathway to competency achievement.

Process

  1. Information gathering
  2. Individual support and counselling
  3. Application process
  4. Formal evaluation and assessment
  5. Post-assessment assistance
  6. Certification
RPL services are not available for research-based degree programs where no formal coursework is completed. Master and doctoral learners may be allowed up to 15 RPL credits toward their degree.
